Coaching Improves Management Performance at Carr Gomm

By Paul Cummings, 23-Oct-2012

Last year, we were delighted to be approached by Carr Gomm to provide coaching to senior managers.  Having completed a pilot coaching service for ten senior managers, the impact on management performance was evaluated.   We are excited to be able to report highly favourable results ann the pilot has been so successful; provision is now being made for a further ten Carr Gomm managers to receive coaching.

The pilot made provisions for a total of six sessions of ninety minutes. Three members of the Kinharvie Institute team delivered the coaching.

At the conclusion of the pilot, a survey of managers was conducted, the purpose of which was to evaluate the coaching service provided by Kinharvie Institute.

  • 83% of managers were ‘very satisfied’ with their coaching experience
  • Of the goals set in coaching, an impressive 100% either ‘strongly agreed’ or ‘agreed’ these were achieved
  • 100% of managers said the topics explored were either ‘very relevant’ or ‘relevant’ to their management role

The following outcomes were attained:

Managers also reported improvement in the following skills/abilities; people skills, dealing with conflict, managing and implementing change, confidence as a manager, motivating people, focusing on solutions and mentoring staff.

We take pride in being able to report that overall, 100% of managers would recommend Kinharvie Institute for coaching.

Irene Edgar, an Operations Manager with Carr Gomm said, "it was excellent to have a non-threatening space away from work with someone knowledgeable yet not involved in Carr Gomm.  The benefit to me was having the opportunity to speak freely and be supported yet challenged.  I believe I am a much better manager now that I have learned how to have difficult conversations with greater confidence and skill.  I am now able to better manage others and do so with the courage I developed as a consequence of coaching with Kinharvie Institute"

The above results suggest clearly that the coaching provision has been experienced by all as very positive.  Managers have found the coaching relevant and appropriate goals have been established and successfully achieved.  The attainment of these goals has been facilitated by the learning gained during sessions and this learning was achieved by acquiring perspective through reflection and receiving support, challenge and feedback.  This has resulted in a significant improvement in the confidence of managers and underlines the value of coaching as an intervention for improving management performance.
